Thomas Fire Help: Connecting Help with Need

We'll Get Through this Together
Last Tuesday, Emily Barany, shared with the Rotary Club of Oxnard, how she pulled together and leveraged her resources to create "Thomas Fire Help" - a grass roots level community-sourced online platform where survivors can quickly find what they need, from initial food and shelter to longer term needs like housing and recovery services. Emily enlisted volunteers at all levels to service those in need and achieve miracles that no one dreamed could be accomplished. Yet, there is still so much more that can be done and is needed. To find out how you can help, visit www.thomasfirehelp.com
Meet Sheriff-Elect Bill Ayub
The Rotary Club of Oxnard is honored to have Sheriff-Elect Bill Ayub share his knowledge and wisdom gained through decades of service to our community. As sheriff, Bill Ayub will oversee more than 1,200 employees, including 700 sworn officers, in five cities and in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Join us for lunch and learn the important issues Bill Ayub plans to address as our new Sheriff. He will also supervise the agency’s specialized units and manage the department’s multimillion-dollar budget. Ayub is looking at a “top-down review of the department” to reorganize staff and evaluate technology in the agency. When he officially becomes sheriff in January, Ayub’s first order of business will be to fill two vacancies in the agency’s executive team following the retirements this year of current Sheriff Geoff Dean and Undersheriff Gary Pentis. Ayub plans to maintain an economically conservative budget, keeping costs down as the department continues its operations. “I realize that if we’re not continuously paying attention, we’ll be using yesterday’s technology when there could be something better or cheaper,” he said.

When he’s not working, Ayub enjoys running and bicycling outdoors, unplugging from social media and spending time with friends outside the agency, “something that’s kept me grounded over the years.” Ayub also stays grounded with support from Stacey, his wife of 26 years; his stepdaughter, Brittany, 32; and his sons, Braeden, 24, and Blake, 21.

Newest Oxnard Rotarian Cynthia Torres shares her Craft with the Club

Cynthia Torres, CEO of New Dawn Counseling, shared her skills, knowledge, wit, and humor with the Rotary Club of Oxnard last Tuesday. Torres, a Licensed Therapist and Certified Clinical Supervisor, delivered an impactful Craft Talk that showcased her talents and expertise, while bringing smiles and laughter to all who attended. Cynthia shared the experiences that helped shape her life's journey, including that of her family housing a Rotary Exchange Student while a youth in Columbia.

With her mother's blessing, Cynthia made the decision to leave her war-torn country for higher education in America... and we are glad she did. Cynthia's insightful journey through life, that she easily conveys, has given her a true sense of purpose. In Cynthia's own words, "Life is a journey, we meet people where they are at, and work collaboratively to create a road map to make life more rewarding."

Her passion and empathy has empowered Cynthia to be a business and professional leader. We welcome Cynthia Torres as a Corporate Member, along with her two outstanding business partners, Veronica Urzua (Vice President) and Karin Lucero-Martinez (Clinical Supervisor and Licensed Therapist). The core values at New Dawn Counseling forward the Object of Rotary and Rotary's goal of Service Above Self.
